Just Another Day + A Haircut

Today was pretty uneventful. Ben woke up with some pretty crazy hair and we decided it was getting a little shaggy so J gave him a little trim.

Tomorrow I'm signing Ben up for the summer reading program at our library. We did it last summer even though he was only a few months old and it's never too early to start reading, right? You track the books you read and they also have a list of activities to do with your child. When you reach a certain number of books and do a certain number of activities you get a small prize and  last year we got to pick out a book.

I'm joining a bunch of other bloggers and will be participating in a blogging day of silence for Baby Cohen who passed away on June 18th. You can read about his story on Megan's blog. Tomorrow is Baby Cohen's memorial and the moment of silence is an opportunity for the blog community to stand behind Megan and support her on this difficult day. I can't imagine what she is going through and I pray that her will be able see all the love around them. Hug for babies extra tight tonight.

17 Months

Ben,

You are 17 months old today! I wish I had started this blog from the moment you were born so I could write down all the things you did month by month although I did write a lot of it down in your baby book! You are getting so big and have such a personality. You still look like your daddy although this month you have become quite the momma's boy. Last month it was more daddy, but this month you are all about me and I LOVE it:)

You talk all the time and no longer sign because you know so many words. You say at least 30 words and can repeat a lot more. Daddy and I have to watch what we say because you are always listening:) You know a lot of animal sounds: monkey, lion, snake, dog, kitty(you have been saying these for a while), and this month you learned cow, pig, and duck. You also know all your body parts and point to them when we ask you where they are, even your teeth. You even point to them on daddy and I. You run very fast and a lot of the times you are faster than me.

You love being outside and playing with balls. You have a special ball at our house and both grandparent's house. You also love balloons and always seem to spot one, even if it is a mile away. You eat everything although you go through phases with certain foods. Daddy taught you to say candy and you say it all the time. Daddy and I learned a little trick though and have started giving you Trix cereal which looks like candy and you don't seem to notice the difference...yet. You really like preschool, especially water play days and you can even say your friend's names, Oden and Barrett. We go to the beach club almost every weekend and you make me go down the water slide with you no less than ten times.

You absolutely love taking a shower and always say "shower, shower" and go into our bathroom. When you and daddy take showers I will sit outside the bathroom door and listen to what you guys talk about. Daddy does a lot of the talking while you try to throw the shampoo bottle at his feet while laughing hysterically. You only take a ba-ba at night time and this month the bottle fairy will be coming to take the bottles away. Each night I rock you to sleep and I love just holding and kissing you. It makes me sad to get rid of your bottles because I know you won't let me rock you anymore once they're gone:(

You are the best thing that has happened to us and we love you sooo much and hope that you grow up and feel that love constantly surrounding you. I can't believe you are almost halfway to being two and I wish I could just freeze time. No matter how old you are or how big you get, you will always be my little baby.

Love, Mommy

Weekend Recap

This past weekend was really relaxing. Saturday morning we got up and J mowed the lawn while Ben and I went to the grocery store. Right before we left, J and I were talking about how we wanted to get Ben a little basketball hoop-the kind that stands on the floor and and be lowered or raised based on the child's height. Ben had played with one at a Parent's As Teachers event we took him to and he loved it. And as luck would have it, as Ben and I turned out of our drive way, I noticed the neighbors up the street were having a garage sale and they were selling one in almost perfect condition for $10. And despite playing with it all morning, I failed to capture a single picture.

That afternoon we lounged around the house and I got out Ben's new crayons and coloring book. Warning: Mommy fail ahead. I sat Ben at his little table to color while I finished getting dressed and blow drying my hair. Now, sometimes when we go out to eat the children's menu will come with crayons and Ben likes to color. Sometimes he will try and eat the crayons. While I knew this when I sat him down, I figured there was no way he would possibly eat the crayons at home. Boy was I wrong! When I came out of the bathroom Ben had eaten a good chunk out of the blue crayon. As he said "uh-oh" and smiled at me, his mouth, teeth, and slobber were all blue. Good thing Crayola's are non-toxic! Ben spit out all the big pieces, but a lot of the crayon was stuck in his teeth so I got out his tooth brush and we brushed away.
His toothbrush was bright blue but thankfully we managed to get all the crayon out of his mouth and teeth and I learned an important lesson. No more crayons unsupervised!

After the crayon incident J's mom came to pick Ben up to stay the night with her. When Ben left he walked out the door, turned around, and said bye and blew us a kiss. It made me want to cry. He is growing up way too fast and it was such a big boy moment. The rest of the afternoon J and I lounged around the house and I finished these two books.

Definitely not "deep" books, but I couldn't help myself. They were actually pretty good and a quick read. Anyone read her third one?

Saturday night we went out to dinner at a new mexican restaurant with our friends Nick and Wendy who just celebrated their one year wedding anniversary. After that we met up with some other friends and played pool. Believe it or not we actually stayed out until 1:00am which is LATE for us and we went straight to bed the minute we got home. J's mom brought Ben back on Sunday and we spent the whole day hanging out around the house and playing with our new basketball hoop. We ordered pizza for dinner which of course Ben loved. He also saw J dipping his pizza in French dressing and of course wanted to do it to. J put a dollop on Ben's tray and he went crazy. Side note, how disgusting is pizza and french dressing. Now ranch is something I can get behind.
Thank goodness daddy had bath duty that night!

So between the crayons, french dressing, and who knows what treats grandma spoiled him with, Ben was quite the little eater this weekend.

Lazy Day and Pottery Barn

Do you ever have one of those days where you get absolutely nothing done? Well that was today. I did manage to do a little laundry and cook lunch and dinner, but that was about it. I got the Swiffer out to clean the floor and Ben decided that he wanted to help and who was I to stop him.

He even got under the couch.

On an unrelated note, we ordered Ben a little backpack from Pottery Barn and it finally came in the mail.  I love Pottery Barn and although they can be a little pricey at times you can find some great deals too. Our diaper bag was looking beat up and it was our second one! We didn't really need that big of a bag anymore anyway so we thought we would get a bag Ben could carry himself.
Is this not the cutest thing you've ever seen? It's definitely not as big as I thought it would be. We got the "preschool" size but if I was going to order it again I would get the "small" backpack. It's a perfect size for Ben to carry though and it holds a thing of wipes, a few diapers, an extra change of clothes, a snack, and a drink. I can't believe my little baby is old enough to be carrying his own backpack. Before I know it he will be carrying a big boy backpack on his way to kindergarten:(

Father's Day Weekend + A Birthday

This past weekend was busy in our house, but we've had so much fun the last couple of days. Thursday night we went to dinner for my mom's birthday. Ben did pretty well and we got a table right next to where they make pizzas. Ben loved looking at the guys throwing the dough and they were so nice to interact with him. They smiled, gave him thumbs up, and made funny faces. I don't think people realize how helpful/entertaining this can be to someone with a child.

After dinner J and I decided to give the frozen yogurt place another try.
After we got our yogurt we drove to the park to eat it and as we were getting out Ben decided he wanted to "drive."

The next night I helped my friend Megan throw a baby shower for a former co-worker. She had a lot of people there and some adorable babies.

Instead of a cake my friend made this amazing fruit baby carriage.

We spent Saturday at the beach club and Saturday night my parent's kept Ben for the night so J and I bummed around the house and hung out just the two of us.

Sunday was Father's Day and even though Ben was at my parent's house we were still up by 8:00am. I made breakfast for J, his favorite french toast and I decided to do a little something special with it.

At lunch time we headed over to my parents house and we grilled out. For dessert I picked up an ice cream cake from Diary Queen that both J and my dad love.

While Ben napped we all played the DVD version of Family Feud and I'm sad to say my parents beat us. When Ben woke up we loaded up the car and headed to see J's family. One thing I really love about J's family is that they all get together whenever possible usually at his aunt's house. All my family lived far away from each other so we never really got to hang out a lot when we were all growing up. I love that Ben will get to grow up with all his cousins around. We all met at J's Aunt's house. They have a pool and hot tub so we bbq'd and swam until it got dark. There are tons of kids and it's so fun to spend quality time with everyone.

What a fun weekend we had hanging out and celebrating all the great dad's!
By the time we hit the road Ben was pooped and so were we!
